Preparing our bodies for the season's changes

Winter is fast approaching. The wind has picked up. We can smell dried leaves and smoke from wood fires. People are beginning to wear hats and gloves and pull up the collars on their jackets. We can see these changes all around us, plain as day. Do you ever wonder what is going on inside of us?

The weather obviously affects our body on the outside so that we need to switch to our warmer clothes. But there are changes happening within us as well. We begin to conserve our energy and heat, so it draws inward. This inward pull can strengthen our immune system. However, if you catch a virus during this time, it may become trapped in your body and you will fight it all winter long. This is why some people catch a cold over and over with the same symptoms. That virus was never fully resolved.

What does our body need during this change? Warmth – from the inside out. That means hot beverages, soups, stews, and warming spices like ginger and cinnamon. There is a reason that mulling spices are used around Thanksgiving time and not in the summer! Their properties are warm and their very nature warms us up when we consume them. So, does this mean we have to give up ice cream? In the summer, no. In the winter, yes! Absolutely. The cold and damp nature of the ice cream (not to mention the sugar) lowers your immunity, so that you’ll be more likely to catch that virus going around.

Eating according to the season is very important. Yet, there is more you can do to help your body. Of course I am going to say “get acupuncture!” Yes, acupuncture will strengthen your immune system so you don’t get sick or resolve a pathogen that you may be harboring already.

Herbs are another thing that will strengthen your immune system. I was recently at a seminar on immunity. I have preventative, anti-viral and anti-bacterial herbs in my arsenal. You may come in for a treatment whether you are sick or not. The media predicts stronger flu viruses this year and the flu shot has great limitations. Be prepared with a strong immune system!

I hope to see you soon. In the meantime, drink lots of hot tea!

In health and gratitude,

Rebecca Abbott, C.Ac.
